How to open a SALON
How to Decide Whatt Kind of Salon to Open; Your Salon Choices
You can open your own salon whether you have a cosmetology license or not, but if you have attended and finished a beauty school, it will help you a lot to understand what hairdressing or beauty practices are, and what to do and expect from the profession. Some people just invest the money in a beauty salon franchise and gain profit that way.
So, franchise or not to franchise! That is a question!
First of all, franchise beauty business requires a lot of money, and most people who use the franchise name and the methods of beauty practices are the ones who like to have already established system that has gained name and reputation; they will bypass all the hard work, since people already are familiar with how the certain franchise works; like Fantastic Sam's, Supersucts, etc. The only two challenges are the amount of money that you are required to put in and that you have to abide with the guidelines, prices and all the set practices of that particular franchise; if you agree to those conditions, then the franchise is the way to go for you.
Another way to gain fast access to a salon of your own is to purchase an already established salon (not a franchise), but a one that has the clientele and the furnishing, the plumbing, etc. But you have to do your homework and find out why this salon is for sale, is it because the owner is retiring, or moving away, or the salon is not doing so good in that area, or the management is not doing its job the way it is supposed to. If the salon is not doing good in that area and the reason is the high prices based on the economy of the demographics of the area, you have a chance to research and adjust your prices and you will be OK. You also need to offer the services that are in demand in that area. For example, if your salon area houses a lot of senior citizens; you need to offer roller set service, even if you hate to do them. If a lot of clients in the area like to have straight hair, offer a variety of hair straightening services; keratin hair straighteners, relaxers, thermal straightening services, etc. You must have the money to purchase the salon, do innovations, and work hard to gain a good reputation or keep up with the already established reputation.
The most common way to open the salon is to start from scratch and use your innovative ideas, make a name for yourself. Yes, it is hard work, but if you put your mind to it, you can do it. You can be a sole proprietor, a partner, or a part of a corporation, which will come later, if you open a chain of salons.
First make a plan of how and where you like your salon to be, what services you will have, how small or large would it be. Find an area that fits to what you are offering: your prices, services, etc. Have enough money to start and to sustain you for at least 6 months (this is a very crucial point, don't overlook it!), find a product line; some will help you set up of offer free advice, education and/or services.
Next; find your space; examine the lease contract carefully, some might rise as your business gets better...have a lawyer or a knowledgeable experienced friend or hired adviser to look at your lease contract. NOTE: you don't have to start very big, start small and grow bigger is a better way if you have minimum resources for business. Salon business takes time to build, be patient.
Make sure to check the State Board requirements (your state board website has it posted on their webpage), you might need to fill out a form and send it to them, and then they will give you time to get ready, approximately 3 months, and will come to visit.
Get an establishment license; it is a must when you open your salon.
You must have insurances; fire, etc, malpractice, etc.
Start you business; you can do a grand opening, offer drink and snacks, some do a demo show, or a mini hair show; in other words make yourself known "Hey, I am here for business..." theme; offer some samples, coupons, and even a free haircut day, or a hand massage day, or a free haircut hour... whatever suits you. When you get ice cream; don't you want to sample it? GIVE SAMPLES! Talk to people, talk to your neighbor businesses, there is so much you can do.
BE CONSISTENT IN YOUR BUSINESS PRACTICE: that is the key to your success. Keep learning.
Good luck!
