Makeup: Special Effects: Bruise

Like the gnarly arm bruise in the movie “Requiem for a Dream” on Jared Leto as “Harry.” Must see: great for movies, productions, music videos, Halloween parties and horror, or just for fun to make gory bruise, inflammation, injured and an infectious look. First prepare the straw for the bruised vein; cut and round it out and open it up for a more dramatic effect for blood and gore. Use Pros-Aide skin  to stick the artificial vein onto the skin. You can also use Flash Latex and/or Spirit Gum obtained from Cinema Secrets store or at Nigel’s. Use a sponge to apply the adhesive on the top of the vein. Apply a sanek strip or tissue with hard lines removed over the straw and dab the adhesive on the strip. If it bubbles, creases and even tears, it is OK, since the blood will get into the small cut and it will give the bruise a more inflamed look. Apply a foundation darker than the skin to add dimension to the inflammation.  Add light red makeup, followed by dark red makeup to intensify the effect. Use Ben Nye or any special effect makeup: blue, brown and black colors on the skin to add depth, shadow and dimension. Use a stipple sponge for blending. Add some Stage Blood to the bruise. Use stipple brush for blood application. Add some more bruise lines and scratch marks. This is a video with step-by-step instructions of how to do gory bruise and popping vein special effect makeup for estheticians, cosmetologists, beauty school students, production makeup artists, and salon and spa professionals. 1. Making special effects was one of my favorite in the training for getting cosmetology license, I actually still use them during Halloween to make the costumes a little bit more freakier.
