Bacteria is a minute one cell microorganism that have a vegetable origin and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Bacteria, microbes, and germs are the same.
There are two kinds of bacteria; harmful called pathogenic, and harmless, called non-pathogenic.
Non-pathogenic; one of the harmless bacteria is saprophytes that decomposes dead matter.
Pathogenic-harmful bacteria is divided into 3 kinds; cocci (round shaped bacteria), bacilli (rod shaped bacteria), and spirilla (spiral shaped bacteria). Cocci is classified as; staphylococci (like pimple on the face), streptococci (strep throat), and diplococci (pneumonia).
Viruses are submicrobeal organisms that are able to penetrate plants and animal tissues, other bacteria, and porcelain filters.
Parasites: infect the body and live off the foreign body: head lice, itch mite (scabies), tapeworm.
Immunity: the body's ability to resist infection. There are two kinds of immunity: natural and acquired. Natural immunity is the one that we are born with. Acquired immunity is gained by either vaccination or by overcoming a disease.
Prevention of bacterial invasion in the salon could be achieved by decontamination.
The three means of decontamination and infection control are: sterilization, disinfection, and sanitation.
Sterilization is the strongest method of decontamination; getting rid of bacteria, done in the hospitals, using steam autoclave, dry heat, boiling, etc. Sterilization is the only method of decontamination that completely destroys bacteria.
Disinfection is done with the use of EPA registered disinfectant, like QUATS. It is a decontamination method second only to sterilization.
Sanitation is used to clean any surface that is contaminated (the weakest method of decontamination).
